‘They Don’t Care’

‘They Don’t Care’ is an ongoing, durational performance which highlights the frustration families commonly face as they try to access services to prevent a mental health crisis.

Lack of timely support for vulnerable sufferers can have devastating consequences, including long periods of hospitalisation, incarceration, homelessness, accidental death or suicide.

Repeatedly writing the words ‘To Whom It May Concern’, I endeavoured over a period of 27 hours to fill 27 reams of paper .

I have written countless letters over the years to request support for my son , many of which were never acknowledged.

His words provide the title of the work.

‘I keep telling you. They don’t care’.

Visitors are invited to join me in an attempt to write on every sheet. The challenge to do so within a specific timeframe has so far proven impossible, ending with no satisfactory conclusion, just like my unanswered requests over the years.

The performance was initiated at City Lit in London as part of their Mental Wealth Festival. It has been continued in the Front Room at the Beaney Museum of Art and Culture, and will be re enacted at future events until the original task is finally completed.
